Description

Founded in 1992, the Lesbian Avengers was a direct action activist organization dedicated to issues vital to lesbian survival and visibility. The founding members were Maxine Wolfe, Anne Maguire, Marie Honan, Ana Simo, Anne Christine D'Adesky, and Sarah Schulman. The Avengers met once a week in the Gay and Lesbian Community Services Center on 13th Street and planned actions around the city and later nation. Their logo featuring the organization's name in block letters circling a stock image of an ignited bomb was originally suggested by Ana Simo and enthusiastically agreed to by the rest of the group. It was printed on buttons, t-shirts, temporary tattoos, stickers and more.
